Sub-ID Tracking
Definition
Sub-ID tracking is an advanced affiliate tracking technique that enables marketers to tag individual clicks, campaigns or traffic sources with unique identifiers (Sub-IDs) for more precise attribution and performance data.
Detailed Explanation
In affiliate programmes, tracking links often include a basic affiliate ID. Sub-ID tracking extends this by allowing affiliates to append custom parameters (for example subid=facebook_ad1 or subid=blog_banner2) so they can break down traffic by source, creative, placement or campaign version. This granularity permits:
- detailed insight into which specific traffic sources convert best;
- A/B testing of creatives, offers or landing pages;
- optimisation of budget allocation based on exact performance;
- improved ability to identify under-performing channels or fraudulent traffic.
Using Sub-IDs means affiliates can drill down from campaign > source > creative and refine their efforts far more effectively than with basic tracking alone.
Example
An affiliate sets up two versions of a banner: one for “Tube Site A” and one for “Blog Site B”. They attach Sub-IDs:
- https://example.com/?ref=12345&subid=tubeA_banner1
- https://example.com/?ref=12345&subid=blogB_banner2
After a week the analytics show that blogB_banner2 delivers double the conversions relative to clicks—so the affiliate decides to scale that source.
Getting Started
Log in to your affiliate dashboard, generate your tracking link, and append a unique Sub-ID parameter for each traffic source or creative. Record each Sub-ID in a spreadsheet or tracker, monitor conversion data by Sub-ID, and pivot your strategy to the highest-performing segments.
AW Empire supports full Sub-ID tracking capabilities so affiliates can measure performance at every level and optimise like a pro.
